Abstract

In the present investigation, the sorption is carried out to test thesuitability of abundantly available plant based material Terminalia catappa L. leaf powder as an adsorbent for removal of lead ions fromaqueous solution. The equilibriumstudies are systematically carried out in a batch process, covering various process parameters that include contact time, adsorbent size and dosage, initial lead ion concentration and pH of the aqueous solution. It is observed that there is a significant increase in percentage removal of lead ions as pH increases from2 to 6 and attainmaximumat pH 6. The contact time is to be 20minutes.The Langmuir isothermismore suitable for sorption followed by Freundlich and Temkin isotherms with a maximum adsorption capacity of 28.63 mg/g of lead ion on T. catappa leaf biomass. The sorption of lead ions follows second order kinetic model having a correlation coefficient of 0.9996.

Abstract

The paper presents controlled release of zinc sulphate fertilizer made with super phosphate as inert matrix. Pellets were made from the mixture and the release rate of zinc sulphate with time was studied. The parameters covered are fractional zinc sulphate, fractional silicate lime, fractional super phosphate and diameter of the pellet. The parameters also measured with naphthalene coating pellets and compared. The release rate expression was obtained and represented as: -r_A = 5.85 f_ZnSO4 ^1.9 f_s 4.23 f_sl ^-0.72 (d_p/d_s)^1.2. The study is useful to identify the controlled release of zinc sulphate fertilizer and also to predict the release rate at any instant of time.
